15. Library 2.0

In "Away from the icebergs," the author wants to stop collecting printed materials. To me that just seems ludicrous, even in this Internet age. He seems to think its just a waste of space for things to be sitting there waiting for someone to come and read them. Another point being made, was that information exchange should go both ways. That I can get on board with. I love that I can access my librarie's catalog on the internet, from any computer. I like knowing before I walk in the door whether or not a book is available and exactly where to find it.

In the "To a temporary place in time..." post, the author feels the future of the library will combine all of its currents elements with Library 2.0. All of the technology will be incorporated, but the library will still be a place that you can go to relax and read a good book. I hope this is what happens, because I feel that reading is a sensory experience. Its more than just the words on a page. I want to feel the book in my hands and turn the pages. If the future means books with no pages, I won't be reading for my own enjoyment because I won't be enjoying it.

  1. These are really good reactions and points. Many libraries are moving toward being the cutural and/or social center of their community. People need to get together and share and learn from each other and libaries can be that place.

  2. Good post. I too can't imagine books without pages. Print materials need to stay around because not everyone prefers to read off screens or listen to books on tape/CD.
